An exhibition by acclaimed contemporary artist Howard Coles will be held at Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni between
July 30 - September 18, 2011.
The exhibition ‘Walking the Shore' will be officially opened on Saturday July 30, 2011 where there will be an opportunity to meet the artist between 12.00 pm - 2.00 pm.
Principally working in oils and mixed media, this is not so much "an exhibition of paintings" as an exposition of the ways that Howard has illuminated a particular aspect of the coastal landscape.
As someone who throughout his life has had a fascination for that strip of the shore that fringes the sea, it is not surprising that the coastal landscape has long been a principal source of inspiration. Born within yards of the tide flats which faced the docks in Cardiff South Wales, he became ensnared in the tide and the tidemarks of a typical industrial waterway. This was his playground. This is where an appreciation of the way seasons and weather brought there shaping of the coast and the effect of light on water and shore.
Living on a relatively narrow peninsula it would be difficult to escape from the sights and sounds of the sea. For an artist who might be more sensitive than most to the tempo and dynamics of a landscape bounded by tidal waters he admits that it would be unnatural to feel diffident about the proximity of the sea, the vulnerability of its shoreline and the weather patterns which distinguishes this from more mountainous areas of Snowdonia.
Add to this the constancy of emotions, smell, fear, exhilaration, calm, culture, magic and wonder, the catalyst of which echoes constantly in his paintings
